Locksley Spotlight v. Churchill (v. Cor de la Bryere) was one of the first Spotted Holsteiner stallions, along with Locksley Redskin (v. Cabaret). Both were born in 1986 to owner Carter Siegel. She sold them to Locksley as yearlings. As all young horses were raised there, both were turned out on 100 acres with cattle. They came in as 2 year olds to breed some mares and start work. Both jumped with super form but Spotlight seemed to have more scope.
The late Morton 'Cappy' Smith called upon Jeff Marsh to come see Spotlight in the jump chute. Jeff can recall Cappy thinking Spotlight was one of the most talented jumpers he'd ever seen. A few years later Cappy traveled all the way to Blacksburg to see him jump again.
Spotlight proved this was a worthy endeavor. Maybe it was not considered 'acceptable' in main stream sport horse breeding, it was most definitely successful! He was 5th at DAD and placed well at major A shows in the amateur hunters. At the time I was young and had no idea how special he was. His step was perfect and he packed me around on a long rein. All I had to do was sit still. He slept at the in gate, walked around show grounds like a gelding, came home screaming to his mares.
